What is addiction?

Addiction is defined as not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful to you. We associate addiction with intense craving and giving in to something that we don’t actually want to do. It’s a common problem but help is available. Addictions include alcohol, drugs, smoking and gambling but we can become addicted to anything that stimulates the brain or gives us pleasure such food, the internet, shopping, sex or pornography.

This guide explores the issue, how it can affect you, and where to get help.
